ETIAS Visa Explained

British travellers heading to Europe can expect big changes coming their way. Currently, UK passport holders enjoy visa-free entry into the Schengen Zone for up to 90 days within any 180 days, but new regulations will soon change this.

After even more delays, after being scheduled to launch in mid-2025, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is scheduled to launch in the final quarter of 2026. The system will apply to travellers from over 60 countries, including the UK, who previously accessed Schengen nations without visas.

The ETIAS vs Traditional Visas

Unlike a conventional visa, ETIAS operates as a pre-authorisation system, much like the US ESTA or Canadian eTA. Visitors from visa-exempt nations will need to secure ETIAS approval before arriving in Schengen territories.

Where Will The ETIAS Be Required?

Travellers will need the ETIAS to enter all Schengen countries, including:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Croatia
  • Cyprus
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Iceland
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Liechtenstein
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg
  • Malta
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland

Outside of the Schengen zone, countries like Bulgaria, Romania and Cyprus, alongside microstates like Monaco and Andorra, will also enforce ETIAS requirements.

Why Is The ETIAS Being Implemented?

The EU is rolling out the ETIAS as a security enhancement. It is designed to screen travellers before arriving to safeguard against potential security risks, including terrorism and unlawful migration.

How Much Will The ETIAS Cost?

The ETIAS application will cost approximately £6 (€7) and remain valid for three years or until your passport expires – whichever comes first. Travellers under 18 or over 70 are exempt from fees but must still apply for the ETIAS.

When Does The ETIAS Come Into Effect?

Although an exact enforcement date is pending, mid-2025 is the expected rollout. After launch, a six-month grace period will allow entry without ETIAS, provided other entry criteria are met.

How To Apply For An ETIAS?

Although ETIAS applications are not open, here’s what to anticipate:

  • The process will be online, taking around 10 minutes
  • Use only the official ETIAS website to avoid scams.
  • Apply well in advance to prevent travel disruptions.
  • Each applicant, including children, must submit a separate request.
  • Information required includes personal details, employment info, and any criminal history.
  • Passports must be valid for at least three months after departure.
  • While most approvals will be quick, processing may take up to 30 days in some cases.

What Is The Entry-Exit System?

Alongside ETIAS, the Entry-Exit System (EES) is expected to start in October 2025, after being pushed back from November 2024. This initiative replaces passport stamping with fingerprint and facial recognition scans, increasing border control efficiency. Children under 12 are exempt.

The ETIAS and Car Rental Excess Insurance

The ETIAS strictly manages entry permissions – it does not safeguard travellers from expensive car hire excess fees for minor damage to the hire car. If you’re renting a vehicle abroad, Cover4Rentals can cover these often pricey unexpected expenses linked to rental car damage.
